Public Transportation in Surabaya

1. TAXIS & HOURLY CHUFFEUR-DRIVEN CARS

In most bigger cities and some towns as well, taxis are available, though only in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang and
Surabaya metered taxis are commonplace. In other cities and tourist areas one can hire cars, usually chauffeur-driven and paid by the hour or for each one-way trip.

At any airport, railroad station as well as bus terminal there will be public transportation available of one kind or another. Another mode of transport is Bajaj (pronounce Bahji), a minicar tricycle seating two passengers rather tightly with its driver in the front. The rate for Bajaj should be bargained beforehand. For Taxis the flag-fall rate is various between Rp 4,000 - Rp 5,000 and for buses fare are also various from Rp 2,000 - RP 3,000 (for Air-Conditional Buses).

2. MIKROLET, OPLET/BEMO and COLT

These different names probably apply to the same vehicles, depending on where you use them. They are usually employed on tours between city and suburbs and can seat up to 10 passengers per vehicle, sometimes even more than its capacity. Fares are not uniform, as here it does depend on distance covered by the passenger. One advantage over the bus routes is that by using these smaller vehicles you may be let off anywhere you want to, making it a slower vehicle because of its frequent stops. If you care to charter such a vehicle, you may do so, however, you should bargain for it after having obtained the right information on the approximate rates from your hotel clerk. They should cost less than hiring a chauffeur-driven car or a taxi.

3. BECAKS

Pronounced “baychahk”, it is a tricycle pedaled by a man who sits normally behind the passenger. It could seat two persons, however, rather tightly. Becaks are mostly found in suburb cities of Jakarta or smaller cities/towns on Java and Medan, and have been here for over four decades. Unfortunately this means of transport is no longer appearing in big cities as motorized transportation has rapidly taken over public transportation everywhere in the country. Make sure you have bargained before with the becakdriver for the agreed upon fare.

"Surabaya Memory" at A Glance

The rapid development of Surabaya as an industrialized city has brought enormous impacts on the life of its inhabitants as well as the city. Economic considerations have often conquered other aspects such as social and cultural aspects of the city and the city dwellers. This condition has lead to the desolation / alienation of its people from their own social and cultural heritage.

This condition is embittered by the absence of a systematic and integrated approach to document and preserve the city's and its people's heritage, either by the city government or by the society itself. It is no surprise to find out that currently, the extensive record about the city of Surabaya might only be found in Oud Soerabaia (Old Surabaya) and Nieuw Soerabaia (New Surabaya) by Von Faber. An initiative is urgent enough to be carried out to improve the condition and to make people aware if such effort is very important. As an academic community, Petra Christian University feels obliged to lead an initiative on this subject.

On the occasion of the 708th Anniversary of Surabaya city, Petra Christian University takes the initiative to commence the efforts of documenting and preserving the Surabaya city's heritage in a systematical, integrated and participatory approach, called the "Surabaya Memory" project. The initiative will encourage public and government participation to contribute their personal or institutional collection of the city's heritage to form an extensive knowledge base of the Surabaya city's heritage.

This approach has been made possible by the development of digital library of Petra Christian University. One of the main features of this digital library is to provide facilities to encourage users to publicly
share the knowledge they have. This approach will have another virtuous effect, which is slowly transform the people of Surabaya and the people of Indonesia as a whole. They will become members of an information-producing society instead of an information-consuming society.

The digital library will also provide a much broader access to information for the society, which in turn will participate in the development of the digital collection. This snowballing effect will guarantee the success of such approach. In the end, the digital collection itself will be not developed alone by librarians, but will be developed by and through the society as the true owner of the heritage.

Welcome to Surabaya

History of Surabaya

Surabaya, provincial capital of East Java and Indonesia's second-largest city after jakarta, served for over half a millenium as trading port for the inland empires of Java. Situated at the mouth of Brantas River, the city was officially founded in 1293 when Raden Widjaja established Majapahit, Indonesia's most glorius empire on the site of a legendary battle between a shark (Sura) and crocodile (Baya).

Surabaya, known as the "City of Heroes" because of its role in the nation's independence struggle, has grown into an elegant city of large, colonnaded buildings bordering broad, tree shaded abenues. It serves as the commercial centre of a thriving industrial and agricultural hinterland. the city's historical sites include KaliMas harbour with its tall-masted trading schooners and, nearby, the narrow alleyways and shop of the Arab quarter redolent of the Middle East.

The historic Majapahit Hotel, where Indonesia's war independence was begun, and the elegant Grahadi State Buildings, an 18th century mansion, have been restored as monuments to an era of colonical grace. Surabaya is also home to one of Southeast Asia's oldest and largest zoos. Purabaya Bus Station (Bungurasih) is number one largest bus station in Southeast Asia

For travellers in East Java, Surabaya serves as a convenient base for exploring the regoins many charm, including Mt. Bromo, the cool mountain retreats of Tretes and Malang and the natural wonders of several nature reserves.
